February Family & Community Letter (2/21/24)

February 21, 2024

Dear CCSD Families and Community Members:

The second semester has been extremely busy for CCSD as plans are being developed that will influence our operations next school year.

First, CCSD has established a Calendar Committee to help develop a calendar for the 2024-2025 school year. The draft 2024-2025 CCSD School Calendar has been emailed to parents and staff members for input and is also attached to this letter. Please note that the draft 2024-2025 CCSD School Calendar will be heard by the CCSD School Board as a first reading during the Wednesday, February 28, 2024 meeting. If you would like to make recommendations for the Board’s consideration about the 2024-2025 school calendar, please do so in one of the following two ways:

  1. During the Public Comments agenda item on February 28, 2024 CCSD School Board meeting, please provide your recommendations to the CCSD School Board for their consideration, or

  2. Email CCSD Superintendent Chris Reitan at creitan@craigschools.com with your recommendations. Chris Reitan will save every email received and ensure the emailed recommendations are included in the Board packet for CCSD Board member consideration.

The district continues to work on the development of our 2024-2025 budget. The CCSD Budget Advisory Committee has met three times to date to provide recommendations to the CCSD School Board. The CCSD School Board also held a Board work session on February 8, 2024 to discuss priorities for the 2024-2025 budget. On Wednesday, March 13, 2024 CCSD is holding a joint work session with the City of Craig to discuss items related to the development of the budget. Unfortunately, CCSD is in the same place as most school districts across the state; we are anticipating a significant deficit for next school year due to flat funding at the state level since 2017. To date, the district has already eliminated 5 certified teaching positions and 1 administrative position for next year. Without additional revenue from the state or the city, CCSD will not be able to provide the level of instructional activities and programs that the district has traditionally been able to offer our students and families we are privileged to serve. There does appear to be positive movement in Juneau, and it looks like we can expect some additional revenue from the state next year, however, it is still unclear what that final amount might be. If provided the opportunity, please don’t hesitate to advocate legislators for additional funding for our public school systems. CCSD, in collaboration with our statewide educational associations, are advocating for an increase of $1,413 to the Base Student Allocation which is the main driver for statewide public education funding.

There is a lot happening at CCSD. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at creitan@craigschools.com or my direct office line (826- 3274 ext. 4003) if there are any questions that would be helpful for me to address about the items noted in this letter or any other district initiative or program. CCSD truly appreciates the support and guidance our families provide. Enjoy the longer days!

Sincerely,

Chris Reitan, CCSD Superintendent
