August Family & Community Letter (8/3/23)

August 3, 2023
Dear CCSD Families,

Craig City School District (CCSD) is excited for the 2023-24 school year. Teachers and paraprofessionals return to work on August 24th for two days of in-service followed by two workdays to ready their classrooms and schools for our students. The first day of school is Wednesday, August 30th.

CCSD will be welcoming approximately 700 students to the district this school year between our four schools: Craig Elementary School, Craig Middle School, Craig High School and PACE Statewide Homeschool program. To support efforts to serve students, we are pleased to welcome eight new staff members to our school community:

  • Marsha Browder – CES - Special Education Teacher

  • Bernie Grieve – CES 3rd Grade Teacher

  • Heather Mendonsa – CES 4th Grade Teacher

  • Stephen DeHart – CHS Science Teacher

  • Amber Junker – CHS English/Language Arts Teacher

  • Troy Thain – CEMS PE/Health Teacher

  • Mikal Sparkman – PACE Teacher, Anchorage Learning Center

  • Jessi Whittom – CHS Custodian

Additionally, the following long-term staff members will be serving in new roles for the district:

  • Grace Beckman – CES 1st Grade Teacher

  • Mike Nelson – CES 5th Grade Teacher

  • Howie Daggs – CMS Math Teacher

  • Christy House – CES Title 1 Teacher

  • Jen Whicker – PACE Teacher, Ketchikan and Craig Learning Centers

  • Thomas Mills – CES Custodian

This is an extremely busy time of the school year as all CCSD staff members are preparing for the new school year. The maintenance and custodial staff are putting final touches on the buildings. The librarian has been volunteering a lot of her time to brighten up and reorganize the elementary library. Teachers and administrators are focused on ensuring every classroom is prepared with rich educational experiences for all students. Our PACE Learning Centers are working hard collaborating with our new and returning families developing Student Learning Plans (SLPs) ensuring the most robust and relevant educational program possible for each individual student. Upshot, we have a ton of good stuff taking place in preparation for the new school year.

CCSD is delighted to have the opportunity to continue building the strong educational foundation that the community, school board, and CCSD staff have built. CCSD values the support and guidance our families and community members provide, thank you!

If you would like to discuss any district initiative in greater detail, please don’t hesitate to call me at the phone number above or the email address below. I’d really appreciate the opportunity to hear directly from all of our stakeholders about potential ways CCSD can continue improving the level of services we provide our families.
