February Family & Community Letter (2/21/23)

February 21, 2023

Dear CCSD Families and Community Members:

The second semester has been extremely busy for CCSD as plans are being developed that will influence our operations next school year.

First, CCSD has established a Calendar Committee to help develop two calendars for the 2023-2024 school year. The first calendar is being modelled after our traditional school calendar; the second calendar being developed takes into consideration scheduling needs associated with our Craig Middle School and Craig Elementary School Major Maintenance projects (if we can move forward with those projects starting this summer). On Friday, February 24 at 3:00pm CCSD will hold a meeting in the CHS commons to answer any questions associated with our calendar development for the 2023-2024 school year. CCSD invites all parents to attend this meeting so that CCSD can address questions related to our 2023-2024 school calendar, as well as address any questions associated with our Craig Middle School and Craig Elementary Major Maintenance projects.

The district continues to collaborate with MRV Architects developing the next steps with our Craig Middle School and Craig Elementary School Major Maintenance projects. Design documents are being updated for both projects and we are anticipating going out for bid again later this month or in early March. As a reminder, these two projects went out for bid in November – December 2022. We received one bid for each project and unfortunately the bid amounts were above what the district has secured for funding for these projects. With the updated design documents, CCSD is hoping for a more competitive bid process resulting in bids that fall within the funding the district has secured for these two projects. As more information about these projects become available, CCSD will share immediately with our parents. CCSD is also planning on going out for bid at the end of February for our Craig High School biomass project.

CCSD has secured funding from the Denali Commission, Southeast Alaska Sustainability Strategy Investment (SASSI) fund, and district funding for this project. The Twin Heat Biomass Boiler has already arrived on the island. Once again, our intent is for a competitive bid process resulting in bids that fall within the funding CCSD has secured for this project.

Finally, CCSD is gearing up for our social media advertising campaign for our PACE homeschool program. Our social media advertising campaign is targeting Anchorage, the Mat-Su Borough, and Southeast Alaskan communities. Our intent is to expand our homeschool model so more families across Alaska can take advantage of our homeschool curricula options and scheduling flexibility to best meet the educational needs and interests of their students. As we progress through the second semester, please be on the lookout for our PACE Facebook and Google display advertisements.

There is definitely a lot happening at CCSD. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at creitan@craigschools.com or my direct office line (826-3274 ext. 4003) if there are any questions that would be helpful for me to address about the items noted in this letter or any other district initiative or program. CCSD truly appreciates the support and guidance our families provide. Enjoy the longer days.

Sincerely,

Chris Reitan, CCSD Superintendent
