August Family & Community Letter (8/2/2022)

August 2, 2022

Dear Parents and Community Members,

The start of the new school year is just around the corner (school begins on Wednesday, August 31), and we are excited to welcome our students and staff members to a new year. As we prepare for the upcoming school year, I want to provide information regarding a couple of items the district has been addressing during the summer months.

● First, CCSD has partnered with the Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB) to help facilitate the development of our new strategic plan. On September 13 and 14, 2022, AASB will be in Craig to facilitate community meetings to solicit input and begin developing a framework for our new strategic plan.

● Second, Governor Dunleavey approved $37.5 million in funding for the Department of Education and Early Development’s Major Maintenance Grant fund. The appropriated monies will provide funding for CCSD’s CMS and CES major maintenance projects. The next steps will be for CCSD to work with MRV Architects to complete the design development documents and then go out for bid. Given the supply chain issues and inflationary costs we are all experiencing, the district is hopeful the appropriated funding will provide enough monies to cover the costs of these two projects.

     ○ The CMS Rehabilitation Project has an estimated cost of $6,297,916. This project will renovate the facility to correct accessibility, security, and other code and condition issues, as well as provide much needed energy efficiency upgrades. The multi-level floor plan of the building will be simplified to eliminate most of the existing ramps and stairs. The administrative offices and entries will be reconfigured to allow supervision of persons entering the school. New boilers, building controls, lighting, fire alarms, and video security systems will also be installed.

     ○ The CES Rehabilitation Project has an estimated cost of $2,117,210. This project will reconfigure the administrative offices and commons areas for better security and reconfigure restrooms for ADA compliance. The project will also install a new ventilation, boiler, kitchen exhaust, fire alarms and sprinkler systems. The project will also include installation of openers and access controls for the elementary school entrances. We will immediately share more information as it becomes available regarding the items addressed in this letter. If you have questions about any of the items noted in this letter or any district initiative, please don’t hesitate to contact me at the phone number listed above or the email address below.

Enjoy the rest of your summer! We are looking forward to reconnecting with everyone later this month.
