May Family & Community Letter (5/5/2022)

May 5, 2022

Dear CCSD Families and Community Members:

The month of May is a special time for CCSD students, parents, and staff.  May is the traditional month in our school calendar where we collectively celebrate our students’ unique talents and academic achievements.  CCSD will host music concerts, drama productions, academic and athletic awards ceremonies, to name only a few of the special occasions that we set aside to celebrate our students’ growth.  It is a bittersweet time of year because a significant number of our students will be leaving CCSD as they graduate and take their next steps towards adulthood.  We will also celebrate our 8th grade students as they graduate from our middle school and transition to the academic challenges that await them at CHS, and our Kindergartners graduate to the first grade.

Additionally, CCSD has been heavily engaged with the legislative process as the Alaska Legislature continues their work developing a statewide budget for FY23.  The Craig Middle School Rehabilitation Project is ranked #2 on the Department of Education and Early Development’s (DEED’s) Major Maintenance Priority List and the Craig Elementary School Rehabilitation Project is ranked #5. CCSD has provided testimony to both the Senate Finance Committee and House Finance Committee requesting support for DEED’s Major Maintenance Grant fund.  If these projects are ultimately funded, the funds would become available on July 1, 2022 and CCSD would then move forward with 100% design development documents and estimations for construction to begin during the summer of 2023.  Coupled with CCSD’s legislative work, CCSD has also been developing a grant application through the USDA – Rural Development program for additional funding for the CHS Biomass Heat Project to install a wood biomass boiler and woodchip hopper at the high school.  All three projects are designed to improve the educational context for our students, staff, and community.

Finally, the CCSD School Board is grateful for all the responses received from our parents, community members and staff members on the CCSD Strategic Plan Survey.

The CCSD School Board will be scheduling a work session soon to review the survey results and to determine the district’s next steps in the development process.  Updating CCSD’s Strategic Plan is a critical district initiative because it sets the overall goals for the district for the next three to five years.

In closing, CCSD thanks our community members for the support and guidance you have provided the district.  The best decisions are made at the local level and CCSD values our stakeholder’s engagement with our work to continually improve the educational opportunities we provide our students on POW and statewide through our homeschool/correspondence program, PACE.  If you would like to discuss any of the items noted in this letter or any district initiative in greater detail, please don’t hesitate to call me at 826-3274 ext. 4003 or email me at the address below.
