February Family & Community Letter (2/3/2022)

February 3, 2022

Dear CCSD Families and Community Members:

February is an important month for CCSD. During the February School Board meeting the CCSD Board revises our budget which provides us an opportunity to get a clearer picture of our revenues and expenditures for the current school year. This budget revision also provides the impetus for our first step in the development of our upcoming school year’s (2022-2023) budget. As our second semester progresses, CCSD will continue preparing for the 2022-2023 school year and will hold meetings with the City of Craig and community members to gather input about our stakeholders’ educational priorities that will shape the development of our FY 23 budget.

Additionally, CCSD is excited about the progress we have made to date on three significant capital improvement projects.

  1. The Craig Middle School Rehabilitation Project is ranked #2 on the Alaska Department of Education’s Major Maintenance priority list. This is a $6,297,916 project that will renovate the facility to correct ADA accessibility, security, and other code and condition issues, as well as provide much needed energy efficiency upgrades. The multi-level floor plan of the building will be simplified to eliminate most of the existing ramps and stairs, and the administrative office and entries will be reconfigured to allow better supervision when people enter the school. This project also includes new boilers, building controls, lighting, fire alarm, and video security systems.

  2. The Craig Elementary School Rehabilitation Project is ranked #5 on the Alaska Department of Education’s Major Maintenance priority list. This is a $2,117,210 project that will reconfigure the CES administrative offices and commons area for better security and functionality, reconfigure restrooms for ADA accessibility, install new HVAC systems to improve ventilation, install new boilers, install a new fire sprinkler system and updated fire alarm, install door openers and access controls for entrances, and replace the kitchen exhaust system.

  3. The Craig High School biomass project has secured additional funding from the Southeast Alaska Sustainability Strategy Investment (SASSI) fund. The SASSI funding coupled with approximately $500,000 from an Alaska Energy Authority grant, and $355,000 that the CCSD Board appropriated as our participating share with the Alaska Energy Authority Grant during the November 18, 2020 CCSD School Board meeting provides the necessary funding to move forward with this project. Once the project agreements with SASSI are finalized CCSD will develop a project timeline for the construction bid process.

Finally, CCSD is gearing up for our 2022-2023 social media advertising campaign for our PACE homeschool program. CCSD has contracted with Fine Point LLC to lead our social media advertising campaign utilizing Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Google display advertisements. Our intent is to expand our homeschool model so more families across Alaska can take advantage of our homeschool curricula options and scheduling flexibility to best meet the educational needs and interests of their students. As we progress through the second semester, please be on the lookout for our PACE YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Google display advertisements.

Our students will be lifelong learners who will be resilient, compassionate, self-sufficient members of society. CCSD will provide an environment that empowers every student, every day to transfer their learning to life.

As always, if I can provide additional information about the items noted in this letter, or any other district program or initiative, please contact me at the phone number above or the email address below.

Enjoy the longer days.

Sincerely,

Chris Reitan, CCSD Superintendent
