December Family & Community Letter (12/7/2021)

December 7, 2021

Dear CCSD Families and Community Members:

The winter holiday break is almost upon us. CCSD thanks our families and local governmental agencies for allowing us the opportunity to partner with you in the development of the best educational program for your child(ren).

CCSD is thankful for the opportunity to partner with our parents/guardians, the City of Craig, Craig Tribal Association, Shaan-Seet, and Tlingit Haida Central Council to collaboratively develop the strongest educational opportunities for our students. CCSD is fortunate to have the strong support and guidance of our POW parents/guardians. It is only through this guidance and support that the district can ensure we are meeting the needs of our families and providing the most robust curricula options for our students.  In addition, CCSD’s strong partnership with the City of Craig and the City’s generous annual contribution to the district’s budget exemplifies the importance our community places on public education and more importantly our children.  CCSD is also extremely appreciative of our partnership with Craig Tribal Association and Shaan-Seet.  CTA and Shaan-Seet have regularly provided funding opportunities and support for all the curricular and extra-curricular programs CCSD is privileged to offer our students and families.  Finally, CCSD couldn’t be more appreciative for the partnership CCSD and Tlingit Haida Central Council have developed in support of our Craig Head Start program.  The combination of support that CCSD receives from our parents/guardians, the City of Craig, Craig Tribal Association, Shaan-Seet, and Tlingit Haida Central Council provides a foundation of collaboration across our governmental agencies that ensures our students are provided the necessary resources for a high quality PreK-12 experience.

Furthermore, the 32nd Alaska legislature will continue its work on January 18, 2022 when our state senators and representatives gavel back into session.  Alaska’s fiscal situation and the development of the FY 23 budget (July 1, 2022-June 30, 2023) budget will once again be making the most headlines.  K-12 education funding will also serve as a major discussion item for the development of the state’s budget.  As stated in previous communications, the Craig Middle School Rehabilitation Project is ranked #2 on the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development’s (DEED’s) Major Maintenance grant list; our Craig Elementary School Rehabilitation Project is ranked #5.   CCSD is optimistic that legislative funding for these projects could be forthcoming during the spring legislative session and will lobby extensively for the Alaska legislature to provide funding towards DEED’s Major Maintenance grant list to include enough funding for our two projects.

In closing, CCSD wishes our entire community a safe, restful winter holiday break.  Please don’t hesitate to let me know if I can provide additional information about the items noted in this letter or any other district initiative.

Happy Holidays,

Chris Reitan, CCSD Superintendent
