August Family & Community Letter (8/2/2021)
August 2, 2021
Dear CCSD Families and Community Members:
The start of the new school year is one month away. CCSD is excited to welcome our new and returning students and staff members to the 2021-22 school year. CCSD staff will participate in two days of in-service (August 26 and 27) followed by two workdays (August 30 and 31) as we prepare our buildings and classrooms for our students’ first day of school on Wednesday, September 1.
As we prepare for the start of the 2021-2022 school year, it’s important for CCSD to stay connected with our island community. Unfortunately, we will continue managing and adhering to procedures and protocols related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The CCSD Board developed the CCSD Board Mitigation Advisory Committee to provide recommendations to the CCSD Board regarding the district’s mitigation and prevention protocols for the 2021-22 school year. The intent is that the CCSD Board Mitigation Advisory Committee will meet monthly to develop recommendations for the Board’s consideration regarding the protocols and procedures the district will implement to help keep our students and community members safe during the pandemic. The next meeting date for committee is scheduled for Tuesday, August 10, at 6:30pm. The committee is developed from a cross section of the different stakeholder groups associated with the district:
Jessica Priddy – POW Health Providers
Kristi Kuhnert – PTSA
Trish Conatser – PTSA
Anna Boshka - CCSD Classified Employees
Deanna Claus – CCSD Certified Employees
Chuck Hanson – CCSD Athletic Director
Marla Dillman - CCSD Board Member
Chris Reitan – CCSD Administration
Additionally, please be aware that CCSD will be utilizing a new English/Language Arts (ELA) curriculum across our K-12 spectrum. Last year, CCSD reviewed a plethora of ELA curricula and the CCSD Board approved during the May 2021 Board meeting Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Into Reading for our kindergarten through 5th grade students, and Carnegie Learning, Mirrors and Windows for our 6th through 12th grade students. During our August 26 and 27 in-service, CCSD’s elementary and secondary ELA teachers will be engaged in professional development focused on the utilization and implementation of our new ELA curricula. If any parent would like to review the new ELA curricula, please contact the main office of your child’s school to set up a time to review the material.
In closing, CCSD is eager for the upcoming school year and getting back to work with our greatest resource on the island – our children. Thank you for sharing your students with us and providing us the opportunity to support their educational endeavors. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at the phone number listed above or the email address below if I can provide additional information about any of the items noted in this letter.
Sincerely,Chris Reitan, CCSD Superintendent
