March Family & Community Letter (3/1/21)

March 1, 2021

Dear CCSD Families and Community Members:

The CCSD School Board modified the district’s Smart Start to School Guidelines during their regular, monthly meeting on February 24, 2021 to include the following language on page 8, "For all out of state travel CCSD staff and students shall follow all state travel orders, mandates, and health advisories and alerts. Unvaccinated students and staff will not return to school for five days after interstate travel.” This updated language is especially important as our families prepare for spring break that is scheduled from March 22-26, 2021. Ultimately what this means is that the district will follow the state of Alaska’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery Health Advisory No. 2 International and Interstate Travel that includes the following:

  • All staff and students older than 10 must be tested at the Ketchikan Airport upon return to Alaska or have a negative COVID test within 72 hours of departure into Alaska.

  • Staff and students cannot return to school for five days and must follow strict social distancing for five days and negative test results are received. They may return to school after the five days of strict isolation as long as they remain symptom free.

  • It is recommended that staff and students receive a follow-up COVID test 5-14 days after arrival.

  • Fully vaccinated staff and students must be tested at the Ketchikan Airport upon return to Alaska or have a negative COVID test within 72 hours of departure into Alaska. Fully vaccinated staff and students do not need to follow strict social distancing while they await test results and can return to school as long as they are symptom free.

Furthermore, CCSD surveyed the parents of our Alaska Native and Native American students during the fall semester. One key aspect of the survey results was that parents indicated that they were not receiving enough information from our schools about our academic and extra-curricular activities. CCSD shared the survey results with our Indigenous Education Committee on January 18, 2021 and the committee recommended that the district include specific information about our schools’ academic programs within our daily bulletins that are emailed to our parents each morning. Please be on the lookout for specific academic information about our different academic content areas in the daily school bulletins.

In closing, if there is additional information I can provide about any of the topics noted in this letter, or any other district program or initiative, please contact me at the phone number above or the email address below. Thank you for your continued support and guidance.
