March Parent & Community Letter (3/6/20)

March 6, 2020

Dear CCSD Families and Community Members:

March is here, the days are getting longer, and CCSD is in the process of planning for our 2020-2021 school year.

March is an important month for the district and City.  CCSD and the City of Craig annually conduct a March budget work-session in preparation for the upcoming school year.  This work-session provides the opportunity for the district to share our FY 21 budget assumptions, our anticipated revenues, and our anticipated expenditures.  It is also the meeting to discuss the City of Craig’s local contribution to the district.  CCSD is fortunate to have such a strong partner in the City.  The City of Craig regularly contributes generously to the district through a direct annual contribution as well as in-kind support (heat to the elementary and middle schools, water, garbage, snow removal, etc.). On Tuesday, March 17, 2020, CCSD and the City of Craig will hold our annual budget work-session at 6:00pm in the Craig High School library.  Also, on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 the CCSD School Board will hold their regular monthly meeting.  One significant agenda item is a first reading of the district’s FY 21 budget.  Both of these meetings are open to the public.  CCSD  appreciates all input and recommendations we receive from our parents and community members as we strive to align our budget as tightly as possible to our strategic plan and to ensure our students have access to the highest quality educational programs possible.  Please don’t hesitate to call me at the phone number above or email me at the email address below if you have specific recommendations about any of the district’s programs as we continue developing our FY 21 budget.

March is also a busy month for our PACE program as we prepare for our spring and summer advertising and enrollment campaigns. One important goal of the district is to continue expanding and improving our homeschool customer service model so that we can serve more families statewide who are choosing to educate their children through our homeschool model.  PACE is developing enrollment and adverting campaigns targeting the Facebook and YouTube platforms.  PACE is also involved with a search engine optimization process to optimize our website to get organic, un-paid traffic from search engine results.  Our goal is for PACE to regularly be in the top 3 sites referenced when prospective families are researching homeschools or correspondence school options in Alaska.   CCSD is excited to be able to offer flexibility, choices, and options for our families on POW as well as our families statewide who want to educate their child(ren) full time or part-time through a homeschool model.

Lastly, CCSD has been monitoring the COVID-19 (coronavirus) news from the lower 48 and internationally. CCSD also met with a representative from the POW Health Network yesterday afternoon about this topic.  Upshot of the situation, as it currently stands, is CCSD is ensuring our schools are well stocked with hand sanitizers and Kleenex tissue.  CCSD is also taking extra precautions to ensure all door handles and other “hot spots” are regularly disinfected.  Our intent is to take every precaution we can to ensure a safe learning environment for our students and staff and to stay calm with all of our decisions.  All in-state travel will continue as regularly planned, for the time being.  We also have a high school Washington DC Close-Up trip planned for May 2-May 11, 2020.  At this time no adjustments have been made to these travel plans, however, this situation is quickly evolving and as more information becomes available the district might need to adjust.

In closing, thank you for sharing your child(ren) with CCSD.  What a privilege it is to be able to work with students from across our state and help them shape our future.  Please contact me at the phone number above or the email address below if there is any additional information that I can share about any of the items noted in this letter.

Sincerely,

Chris Reitan, CCSD Superintendent
