Grammar and Composition

This introductory English course addresses listening and oral language; written communication; reading; and grammar and composition. In the class, students will learn to give oral presentations, practice correct grammar usage, develop their writing skills using the writing process and increase their comprehension of written works.

Expository Writing

This semester-long class covers writing advanced essays. Advanced essays will include five to eight paragraphs with each paragraph containing six to eight sentences minimum in the correct organizational format. Essays to be covered include Explanatory Essays, Contrast Essays, Problem-Solving Essays, Research Essays, as well as shorter writings. In addition students will work in the level B book of the high school vocabulary program. Students in Expository Writing should be working at Level 7 and 8 of the Writing Targets for Craig City School District.

Developmental Writing

Developmental Writing is a year-long class in which students work on basic writing skills and the use of language mechanics. Students write papers in various formats, including: narrative/creative, descriptive, poetry, autobiographical, explanatory, summaries and research reports. In addition, students will read, listen to and evaluate various stories, novels and plays. They will work to identify plot, setting, theme, characters, conflict, climax and resolution in works of fiction. Students in Developmental Writing will work at various levels of the Reading and Writing Targets for Craig City School District.

American Literature

American Literature is a semester-long class. Students will read, listen to, examine and evaluate various works of American literature becoming familiar with selected American authors. In addition, students will recognize that society and authors influence each other. Students will read from an American literature text, and various novels/works. These may include Scarlet Letter, Last of the Mohicans, Old Man and the Sea, Of Mice and Men. Class work may include grammar and vocabulary activities as needed. Students in American Literature will be working at levels 7 or 8 of the Writing Targets and Level 8 of the Reading Targets for Craig City School District.

British Literature

British Literature is a semester-long class. Students will read, listen to, examine and evaluate various works of British literature becoming familiar with selected British authors. In addition, students will recognize that society and authors influence each other. Students will read from a British literature text, and various novels/works. These may include Hamlet, A Tale of Two Cities, Pride and Prejudice, Animal Farm, and Pygmalion. Class work may include grammar and vocabulary activities as needed. Students in British Literature will be working at levels 8 or 9 of the Writing Targets and Level 8 of the Reading Targets for Craig City School District.

World Literature

World Literature is a semester-long class. Students will read, listen to, examine and evaluate various works of World literature becoming familiar with selected World authors. In addition, students will recognize that society and authors influence each other. Students will read from a World literature text, and various novels/works as well as watch a couple of movies of dramatized works. These may include mythology readings, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, A Boat to Nowhere, A Long Way From Home, Murder on the Orient Express, and Cyrano De Bergerac. Class work may include grammar and vocabulary activities as needed. Students in World Literature will be working at levels 8 or 9 of the Writing Targets and Level 8 of the Reading Targets for Craig City School District.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing is a semester long class. Students will write a variety of stories ranging in length from two to ten or more pages. Students will be expected to address various elements of short stories in their assignments including dialogue, setting, characters, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Topics students are to address may include Historical Memory, Another Time and Place, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Choice, Quest, and Mystery/Detective. Students are required to publish at least one story in the classroom literature book, Images, and one story on the class on-line version of Images. Students will also be working in the Level C of the Vocabulary Program. Students in Creative Writing should be working at Level 8 and 9 of the Writing Targets for Craig City School District.

Research Writing

Research Writing is a semester long class. Students will write a variety of papers to include 300-500 word Response papers as well as 100-1500 word research essays. Students will be expected to learn to use parenthetical references as well as a works cited using MLA or APA style. Types of essays will include Remembering People, Proposing a Solution, Explaining a Concept, Arguing a Position, and Speculating About Causes. Students are scored according to the Scoring Guide for Writing Target Levels. Students will also be working in the Level D book of the Vocabulary Program. Students in Research Writing should be working at Level 8 and 9 of the Writing Targets for Craig City School District.

Journalism (Elective credit)

Journalism is a year-long class that produces the yearbook and on-line newspaper for Craig High School. Since the yearbook is self-supporting, the focus during the first quarter is on students designing and selling ads to the community and senior parents. Students will also take photos, design and complete page layouts, and proof each other’s work. During the second semester-after the yearbook- has been sent to the publishers- students will write various types of journalism assignments to include news stories, feature stories, editorials, and reviews. These will be published on-line and linked to the Craig High School home page. Students in Journalism will be working at levels 6, 7, 8, or 9 of the Writing Targets for Craig City School District. In addition, Personal and Social Targets are addressed.
