Academic Decathlon
Academic Decathlon is a yearlong course. Students will spend time preparing for 10 academic events by researching, studying, teaching, and practicing in the areas of fine arts, economics, math, science, literature, essay writing, public speaking, social science, and interviewing. In essence, this course prepares students for the State Academic Decathlon Event in Anchorage. However, Academic Decathlon also prepares students for the rigors of college and the skills needed to succeed in any career. Academic Decathlon is a state and national team competition that challenges students to strive for academic excellence.

Alaska Natural Science

Alaska Natural Science is a year long course for which students receive elective credit; it fulfills the requirement for the third year of science at Craig Schools. The class is designed to provide students interested in education and the visitor industry with opportunities to learn accurate, interesting information about the natural history and resources of Alaska. The course meets the requirements for the Alaska Naturalist School-to-Work Program sponsored by the University of Alaska Southeast Sitka Campus.

Art
Art is a full year class. Students in class will learn basic design principles before beginning unit projects. Units in art may include hand-built and clay pottery, drawing, or oil painting. Mini units will address individual and small group interests such as calligraphy, digital art, and watercolor. Mini units will address art history. Students are expected to work in class on each unit.

Career Exploration
Students explore career opportunities based on personal assessments, interviews with community members, guest speakers and research of occupational outlooks. Other topics to be covered include: filling out employment applications, mock interviews, field trips to various businesses and job shadowing.

Concert Band
Concert Band is a group open to all students who have technical proficiency on a wind or percussion instrument. Emphasis is placed on refining more advanced musical skills and a wide variety of musical selections are performed. Members are required to perform in several concerts. Outside practice is expected.

Concert Choir
Concert Choir is a group open to all high school students who would like to be involved in music regardless of experience. Emphasis is placed on vocal technique, health and maintenance, and on learning a varied and quality repertoire. Members are required to perform in several concerts.

Drama
This course is designed to introduce students to the art of the stage. Students will learn the basic skills of acting, stagecraft, and interpretation. Depending upon class size, interested students will have the opportunity to learn the basic aspects of directing. The class will be required to put on at least two productions each year, one in the fall, one in the spring. Students will also work with elementary and middle school students on small productions when possible.

Beginning Home Economics
This course focuses on the importance of good nutrition, the study of textiles and child development. During the first semester, students will study basic living skills, learn about textiles and how to sew by hand and with a machine. Second semester study concentrates on cooking and child development.

Advanced Home Economics
Advanced Home Economics focuses on the development of complex culinary arts skills; food service management; advanced textile production and human development, which includes anatomy, reproduction, family and marriage and issues faced by adolescents. Journalism
Journalism is a year-long class that produces the yearbook and on-line newspaper for Craig High School. Since the yearbook is self-supporting, the focus during the first quarter is on students designing and selling ads to the community and senior parents. Students will also take photos, design and complete page layouts, and proof each others' work. During the second semester-after the yearbook- has been sent to the publishers- students will write various types of journalism assignments to include news stories, feature stories, editorials, and reviews. These will be published on-line and linked to the Craig High School home page. Students in Journalism will be working at levels 6, 7, 8, or 9 of the Writing Targets for Craig City School District. In addition, Personal and Social Targets are addressed.

Life Skills (9-10-11-12)
This course gives students practice in the skills needed for such tasks as budgeting, banking, income and credit management, taxes, insurance and investments. Also covered are job applications and interviews, personal finance and other important life skills.

Marine Technology is the study of the marine environment, and how it relates to the various fishing industries. Students learn Coast Guard rules and regulations and how they pertain to working on the water and human safety. Students go in and on the water for real-life experience.

Post Secondary Prep
Post Secondary Prep, a semester class, is designed to help junior and senior students prepare for the transition from high school to post-secondary training. The course explores career fields, planning and decision-making and prepares students for scholarships and college entrance exams. This class involves extensive writing. It is recommended for students who plan to go on to college or trade school.

Spanish I
Spanish I is a year-long introductory class for which there are no prerequisitesoutside of the interest and motivation needed to study and become proficient in a foreign language. In this course, students are introduced to the mechanics of the Spanish language with the intention of conversing, writing, and reading Spanish. Studies also include the culture of Spain and Latin America, including holidays, customs, geography, history, and cuisine.

This class builds upon skills learned in Introductory Spanish. Participants increase their proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish. Stage Productions is a class designed to explore the technical requirements and operations of a stage. Emphasis is placed on makeup, stage design, lighting, and sound technology.
